The University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix proudly organizes Mini-Medical School, a fascinating community lecture series open to the public.

September is Women in Medicine and Science Month, an initiative developed by the American Medical Association. The College is celebrating female scientists, physicians and faculty who mentor, advocate, network and offer training and development to female students and researchers.

Amelia Gallitano, MD, PhD, is a physician-scientist whose goal is to improve the treatment of mental illnesses. At Mini-Medical School, Dr. Gallitano will share how difficult this task can be, considering there is no biological test to diagnose a mental illness such as schizophrenia or post-traumatic stress disorder. 

Part of the problem is that psychiatric illnesses are thought to be caused by genetics and environmental factors.

Attendees will learn how Dr. Gallitano leads a laboratory that investigates a family of genes activated in the brain in response to environmental events. These genes are ideally poised to explain the risk for mental illness. 

Dr. Gallitano is the interim chair of the Women in Medicine and Science Committee and an associate professor in the Departments of Basic Medical Sciences and Psychiatry.
