The Beauty of Autism—Visual Art and Poetry

Welcome to a unique event celebrating the beauty of autism through visual art and poetry! Creighton University Health Sciences brings together health care, visual arts, and poetry at the opening of Bunting’s celebrated exhibition on the Phoenix campus. Part keynote, part workshop on the use of ekphrastic poetry to bring the visual arts to life on the written page, The Beauty of Autism—Visual Art and Poetry is framed around the artwork of celebrated photographer Blair Bunting, in conversation with curator, James Burns, who openly live with and speak about their Autism diagnoses.

Distinguished poet Sheila Black delivers a keynote address on the power of poetry, leaving us with the opportunity to create our own. Black’s keynote is immediately proceeded by an interlude of student poets sharing their ekphrastic poems that illuminate Bunting’s exhibition.

This event is open to the Creighton and local community.

In conjunction with the robust medical and health humanities work Creighton integrates into the curriculum of its nearly 900 students comprising six health sciences programs in Phoenix—MD, PA, ABSN, PT, OT, and PharmD.—this is purposeful programming developed for the humanity of health care.
