Analysis of clinical trials economic impact data published by the Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO)reveals that Arizona ranks 9th in the United States for economic impact generated by clinical trials activity, 3rd in states West of the Mississippi, and 1st in the Rocky Mountain Southwest.  (Data Point as of February 28, 2022.)

Why use economic impact as a key indicator?

Clinical trials come in all shapes and sizes.  Economic impact calculations factor in the costs of labor, facilities, and other factors that provide a better picture of both the volume of clinical trials, the level of patient populations, and their complexity.

  • Population (up 11.9%  from 2010 to = 7,151,502).
  • Race and ethnicity (White alone 53.4%; Black alone 4.4%; Hispanic 30.7%; Asian alone 3.6%; American Indian and Alaska Native alone 4.5%; Some Other Race alone 12.6%; Two or More Races 13.9%).
  • Diversity Index (61.5%, up from 54.9%).

Fun Fact

 The All of Us Research Program is a historic effort to collect and study data from one million or more people living in the United States. The goal of the program is better health for all of us. 
The program includes racial and ethnic minorities as well as sexual and gender minorities, people with low income or limited education, and other groups. According to NIH, the demographics include ~45% racial and ethnic minorities; +80% Underrepresented in Biomedical Research
As of May 2024,  Arizona has fully enrolled over 71,540 people in the program, second only to California with 75,100.  That's pretty impressive since California's population is 5x that of Arizona.
