Redefining Translational Medicine through Veterinary Clinical Trials

Thursday, August 2, 2018

Noon – 1 p.m.

Biodesign Institute Auditorium, 727 E. Tyler St., Tempe, AZ 85281

Craig Woods, DVM, MBA, Director, Institute for Healthcare Innovation, Assistant Professor, Midwestern University

Translational medicine is being redefined; away from inducing disease in lab animals and toward the study of spontaneous diseases in companion animals. Companion animals develop orthopedic, neoplastic, neurological, immune-mediated, genetic and infectious diseases with comparable pathophysiology to people. In addition, veterinary medicine offers a real-world hospital setting and a diverse translational population to evaluate medical technologies for researchers, startup companies and university technology transfer offices. This seminar will cover comparative diseases in orthopedics, neurology and infectious disease; how to leverage veterinary trials to de-risk technologies and increase technology valuation; and reveal development considerations for entering the multibillion-dollar animal health market.
