Experienced Medical Device Executives Join Excelsius Surgical Board
Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) September 24, 2013
Excelsius Surgical, LLC today announced that it has named Dr. Fred Moll and Mr. Rich Grant to its Board of Directors. Excelsius Surgical is developing next generation surgical robotic technologies integrated with digital imaging for the spine, brain and other therapeutic markets. The addition of these experienced industry executives will provide strong leadership for the company as it continues the development process and works towards securing regulatory approval and commercialization. A prototype of the robotic surgical guidance system was developed by Dignity Health’s Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, AZ.
Two of the Excelsius Surgical founders, Neil R. Crawford, PhD, lead investigator in Barrow’s Spinal Biomechanics Lab, and Nicholas Theodore, MD, neurosurgeon and chief of the spine section at Barrow, developed the technology which integrates state-of-the-art intra-operative digital imaging with an image guided robotic surgical system. The system enables surgeons to perform robotically assisted minimally invasive surgery for a variety of spinal procedures, resulting in less trauma for the patient as well as reduced radiation exposure for patients, operating room staff, and surgeons. Dr. Moll and Mr. Grant join Drs. Crawford and Theodore as well as Mitch Foster, CEO on the Board of Directors.
Dr. Fred Moll is a pioneer in the field of laparoscopic surgical technology, the founder of companies and the developer of multiple innovative technologies that have set the standard of care for the industry. In 1995 Dr. Moll founded Intuitive Surgical, Inc. and served as CEO, leading the commercialization of the Intuitive da Vinci System . With over 2500 systems installed in more than 2000 facilities, the da Vinci system has become the standard of care for prostate, hysterectomy and other laparoscopic surgical procedures. Today Dr. Moll serves as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Auris Surgical Robotics. The combination of his knowledge of robotics and experience in introducing new technologies into the healthcare market will help Excelsius Surgical successfully launch the Surgical Robotic Guidance System.
Rich Grant has extensive executive experience in medical products and medical imaging devices. Mr. Grant was President, CEO and co-founder of Breakaway Imaging, LLC, leading the introduction of the O-arm, an innovative imaging technology incorporating 2-D (fluoroscopy) and 3-D (CT) imaging in a mobile platform optimized for orthopedic and spine surgery. His experience with innovative medical visualization products and in generating company growth and value will help lead Excelsius Surgical towards success in the market.
“We are pleased to have Dr. Fred Moll and Rich Grant join our Board of Directors. They are each highly respected in the industry, with success in turning innovation into success for the advancement of patient care. Their executive experience will insure that Excelsius Surgical achieves its full potential. We are focused on creating clinical value and becoming the standard of care in several specialties,” says Mitch Foster, CEO of Excelsius Surgical, LLC. “Dr. Moll and Mr. Grant have personally driven change through innovative technologies that have made substantial and positive impact on patient care, and they believe in the future of robotic-assisted surgery. Their participation in Excelsius Surgical adds significant value to our team.”
